Domestic abuse charities Staying Put & DVS show red card to World Cup violence

Staying Put and DVS are urging people to speak out if they suspect, witness or experience domestic abuse during the football World Cup this summer.

Incidents of domestic abuse are known to rise during football tournaments, with calls in some areas doubling.

However many more incidents will go unreported. Research shows that the average victim will suffer over 50 times before they tell anyone.

Yasmin Khan, Director of Staying Put, said: “We know there is a link between the football World Cup and domestic violence. Sadly the combination of high emotions and often alcohol can increase the likelihood of domestic abuse.

“We would urge anyone who feels vulnerable or threatened to ask for help. We would also encourage people to look out for their friends and neighbours and be aware of any signs of abuse.

“We will be increasing our work with West Yorkshire Police during key World Cup games – we want people to know that help is available. You don’t have to suffer in silence.”

Staying Put is based in Bradford and DVS is based in Keighley; they work in partnership together and offer a range of services across Yorkshire and Humber.

Research into the links between the football World Cup and domestic abuse rates revealed that violent incidents increased by 38% when England lost – but also rose by 26% when they won.

The research, by Lancaster University criminologist Dr Stuart Kirby, a former police officer, analysed police reports of domestic violence during the World Cups in 2002, 2006 and 2010. Incidents also increased in frequency at each tournament.

Anyone who feels they, or another person, are in immediate danger should call the police on 999.

The Staying Put and DVS Freephone helpline is open Monday to Friday, 0808 2800999.

The National Domestic Violence Freephone Helpline is open 24 hours a day on 0808 2000 247.
