Staying Put defends plans for Bradford refuge

Domestic violence and abuse charity Staying Put is speaking out in defence of plans for a refuge in Bradford.

Posted in General

A company called Strong Foundations is seeking to open the supported accommodation and refuge in Great Horton.

The accommodation would provide a safe environment for service users at risk of domestic and sexual violence, homelessness, care leavers and women experiencing housing difficulties, including women who may find themselves vulnerable during times of crisis.

However, a petition against the plans has been launched by residents.

Yasmin Khan, director of Staying Put, said: “We are saddened to hear the opposition to these plans from local residents. We deal with women every day who are in desperate need of support and help, not condemnation and prejudice.

“These are women who, through no fault of their own, have suffered terrible domestic abuse and need a safe place to live. We are in desperate need of more refuges such as the one proposed.

“However the negative publicity around these proposals could now put vulnerable women at risk, even if the scheme were to go ahead. We would urge all residents of Bradford to be more considerate and compassionate towards those less fortunate than themselves.”

Staying Put’s Freephone helpline number, 0808 2800999, is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
