The Creative Butterfly ProjectTM and Staying Put celebrate £10,000 lottery award

Domestic violence and abuse charity Staying Put and The Creative Butterfly ProjectTM are celebrating being awarded £10,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All.

The Creative Butterfly Word-Art Project will help survivors of abuse build confidence with literacy, especially after possible negative experiences of school, or where they may have additional needs or where English is their second language.

The aim is to tackle multiple barriers to learning which have been highlighted by survivors. The Creative Butterfly ProjectTM was set up by Jill Boyd in 2016 to help other female survivors of domestic abuse recover and rebuild their lives.

Jill said: “This is fantastic news. It will make such a difference to women in building their confidence, self-esteem, reduce isolation and hopefully improve their employability prospects.”

Jill is now a qualified teacher in Further Education, specialising in Expressive Arts, as well as a community artist, and will facilitate the group alongside Tracy Glover, a qualified English Teacher and an artist.

Volunteers will also attend each group session to assist delivery and support and encourage participants, one of whom will be Urdu speaking.

Jill said: “Both Tracy and I look forward to working together for this survivor-led initiative, alongside volunteers who are also passionate about working with domestic abuse survivors!”

Yasmin Khan, Director of Staying Put, said: “It’s wonderful news that we have been given this funding thanks to the National Lottery. The Creative Butterfly ProjectTM has been enormously successful since it began and this funding will allow it to expand its scope.

“By using art as a medium for expression and exploration, barriers to learning can be reduced and literacy skills developed alongside. This will increase confidence and self-esteem, reduce isolation, improve mental health outcomes and potentially develop employability.”
